Dr. Shannon’s talk will highlight the process of laser welding, in which a laser raises the temperature of the material to be welded through focusing the laser’s energy onto small areas of the material. The energy of the laser light photons is absorbed in the material lattice and causes eventual lattice breakup and melting. The laser is a high energy density process that provides a unique welding capability to maximize penetration with minimal heat input. The weld is formed as the intense laser light rapidly heats the material – typically in fractions of milliseconds.
Dr. Shannon will discuss the three types of laser welds, based on the power density contained within the focus spot size: conduction mode, transition keyhole mode, and penetration/keyhole mode. He will also highlight the selection of materials and of welding laser types, based on individual end use cases.
